Key US Tax Deadlines Every Taxpayer Should Know

A quick reference to the main federal filing and payment due dates for individuals and businesses.

Missing a tax deadline can lead to penalties and interest. Here are the main federal due dates for calendar-year taxpayers. When a deadline falls on a weekend or legal holiday, it moves to the next business day.

Individuals

  • April 15 — Form 1040 due, and the deadline to request an automatic six-month extension (Form 4868).
  • October 15 — Extended Form 1040 due.
  • Remember: an extension gives you more time to file, not more time to pay. Tax owed is still due in April.

Estimated tax payments

If you have income without withholding, such as self-employment or investment income, quarterly estimated payments are generally due April 15, June 15, September 15 and January 15 of the following year.

Businesses

  • March 15 — Partnership (Form 1065) and S corporation (Form 1120-S) returns due; extended returns are due September 15.
  • April 15 — C corporation returns (Form 1120) due; extended returns are due October 15.

Foreign account reporting

The FBAR is due April 15, with an automatic extension to October 15.
