Australia TFN and ABN: personal tax records and business registration

Check existing numbers, application eligibility and business details before choosing a route.

TFN and ABN are often discussed together, but they answer different identification needs. Start with your situation and the activity you intend to undertake.

Use the appropriate application route

An individual TFN is a reference for tax and superannuation. If you already have one, look for the existing number. An ABN identifies a business or organisation, and entitlement depends on the applicable rules; taking on a contract does not automatically establish eligibility.

Prepare consistent information

  • Identity details and any previously issued TFN or ABN.
  • The applicant’s circumstances and the appropriate identity-check route.
  • Business structure, legal name, associates and actual business activity.
  • Business commencement details and current contact information.

Treat registration as the start of a record

Check which information will appear on the Australian Business Register and retain the registration notice. Review any separate GST or other registration needs and arrange updates when business details change. A number by itself does not resolve the business’s continuing reporting obligations.
